Opportunities for ELLIS Students based at Sites Abroad
Are you an ELLIS PhD student from an institution outside of Germany and interested in conducting research in a leading German AI environment? The Visiting ELLIS PhD Student Scholarships support research stays at ELIZA sites.

Target group:
- ELLIS PhD students at an ELLIS site outside of Germany.
Aim:
- Support 6-12 month research stays at an ELIZA site.
- Offer competitive Konrad Zuse Visiting ELLIS PhD Student Scholarships.
- Enhance research mobility to Germany for top ELLIS students.
Arrangements:
- Visiting of an existing co-supervisor at an ELIZA site.
Funding:
- Funding will follow the official DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) rates.
- Additional financial support is available for married candidates and those with children.
- Relocation support is provided, with the specific amounts depending on individual needs and following DAAD guidelines.
Duration:
- Between 6 and 12 months
Decisions:
- Key acceptance criteria: outstanding aptitude for PhD studies in machine learning-driven AI based on previous research, topical match with the hosting ELIZA fellow, and intersection with ELIZA’s four research areas.
Application process:
This initiative is a vital element in ELIZA’s mission to establish itself as the national German educational platform for ELLIS, connecting with both national and international academic and industrial partners. It supports ELIZA’s vision of linking global AI talent with German academia and increases the ELIZA School’s national and international prestige among master’s and PhD programmes in machine learning-driven AI.
